Three more days for monsoon to hit city, get ready for a wet week ahead

It is still three days before the monsoon hits Delhi. However, the Met officials said on Monday that Delhiites could still enjoy some pre-monsoon showers.

“We are expecting rains almost every day this week. The sky would remain cloudy on most of the days and there would be intermittent rains,” said a senior official of the regional weather forecasting department.

With rains expected almost throughout the week and monsoon at the door steps, the temperature is also likely to drop from Tuesday.

“We expect the mercury level to drop to around 30°C by the middle of this week. The night temperature would also drop and come down to around 25°C,” said a senior official.

Met officials claimed that with more rain in the pipeline, this could turn out to be the wettest June in the last one decade.

“In 2013 Delhi (Safdarjung area) received around 119 mm of rain. And in 2007 it recorded around 150 mm of rain. This year the Safdarjung station has already received more than 122 mm of rain between since June 1. If there is more rain from Monday night it could turn out to be the wettest June since 2007,” said a senior official of the MeT department

Meanwhile, the monsoon, which was running behind schedule, picked up strength from Sunday after being ‘dragged’ and ‘pushed’ by two meteorological systems.

“While on one hand a cyclonic circulation is pushing the monsoon from behind and helping it to advance deeper into the Indian landmass, a western disturbance that is supposed to hit north west India is inducing favourable conditions for the onset of the monsoons in DelhiNCR,” said a senior official of the National Weather Forecasting Centre in New Delhi.

Experts claimed that the easterly winds which are a prelude to the approaching monsoon are at the city’s doorsteps and are likely to sweep Delhi from Tuesday too.
