Manjula was left bleeding in the barrack, and no help was offered by the jail authorities, the witness said. It was only after Manjula fell unconscious in the bathroom that she was taken to the resident doctor at the jail who immediately asked for her to be transferred to JJ Hospital. She died at the hospital.
The post-mortem examination report said Manjula had about 11 to 13 contusions all over her body. The dean of JJ hospital, TP Lahane, said her lungs were damaged.
The police started a probe and based on the witness’ statement, an FIR accusing the five constables and the jail officer of murder was filed. Manjula’s brother Sharad Shetye had said, “She was taken to the hospital on Friday at 7.30pm and we were informed only at 7am on Saturday...”
A day after former media bigwig Indrani Mukerjea — who is in Mumbai’s Byculla jail on charges of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora — and other prisoners staged protests following an inmate’s death allegedly due to beating, the police plan to question her to determine her role in the incident.
Police have booked Mukerjea and several other prisoners for rioting but she will be interrogated following reports that she may have instigated the prisoners to stage a violent protest.
Based on post-mortem reports from JJ Hospital, police booked six jail officials for the death of Manjula Shetye.
They also registered a cross complaint against 200 inmates, including Mukerjea.
