The MLAs will have to project the requirement of the cameras and suggest details such as the number and location of the cameras by August 15.

To enhance security in the Capital, especially in the wake of crimes against women, the Delhi government will install about 1.5 lakh CCTVs in residential areas and market places at different locations by the end of this financial year.

Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday cleared the first phase of the project to be implemented by the public works department (PWD). Tenders will be floated soon and the project is likely to be awarded by September end.

PWD minister Satyendar Jain said about 2,000 cameras would be installed in each of the 70 assembly segments in the first phase at a cost of about ₹ 250 crore.

“The MLAs will have to project the requirement of the cameras and suggest details such as the number and location of the cameras by August 15. They would have to suggest names of resident welfare associations (RWA) and market associations that would monitor the cameras,” Jain said.

The PWD will install and execute the work for the RWAs and market associations at the identified locations and hand over the assets to them.

The minister said the project is being implemented on the model executed in the chief min- ister’s New Delhi constituency with his MLA LAD fund.

About 1,000 cameras have been installed in Kejriwal’s constituency with localised monitoring and feed storage system.

“While the vendor chosen by the PWD will maintain the cameras, the safety and security of the installation will be responsibility of the RWAs. The feed of cameras will be made available at centralised locations in the colony as identified by the RWAs concerned. A detailed discussion has been done with Delhi Police about the storage and sharing of the feed. The feed will be saved for 30 days,” Jain said.

Each assembly segment will initially get 2,000 cameras. Additional cameras can be installed with MLALAD funds if any area legislator proposes more CCTV cameras in their areas.
