Cops probing kidnap bid in Hauz Khas village

-

A series of tweets describing a possible abduction bid in south Delhi’s Hauz Khas village left the Delhi Police in a tizzy on Thursday.

By evening, however, police said an enquiry did not yield any victim, eyewitness or complainant who could substantiate the Twitter user’s allegations.

“But our probe is on and we are trying to find any CCTV footage,” said Chinmoy Biswal, Additional DCP (south).

The allegations on Twitter were made by a woman who claimed to be an eyewitness to the alleged abduction bid, but who did not want her identity to be made public because of safety reasons. She alleged that she was returning home from Hauz Khas when she had noticed 5-6 carborne men follow a young woman who was accompanying a drunk male friend. The men allegedly tried to pull the unidentified woman into the car, but had to back off because of intervention by the Twitter user and her group of friends.

The woman told HT that the victim was not harmed and during the entire episode no policemen were seen on the stretch of road. She suspected that the men were out with a plan to kidnap and rape a woman.

The Twitter user, however, did not call the police as she believed “they don’t act in such cases”. When a police team reached out to the woman, she shared all details with them, but refused to be the formal complainant in the case. She instead told the cops to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged crime. HTC
