You failed to protect my girl, Rohini victim’s mom tells cops

her daughter’s body was being cremated in Rohini on Thursday, the distraught mother of the 17-year-old girl posed some uncomfortable questions to the police about women’s safety in the city.
“It was your duty to ensure my daughter’s safety when she left home for school or tuitions. Did you not fail in providing a safe environment to her?” Lalita Sharma, the mother of victim Shreya, asked a group of police personnel who were trying to console her.
“Now you will make me relive this trauma for decades as I attend court proceedings to seek justice for my daughter,” she added, leaving the cops speechless.
Lalita is a therapist at a naturopathy hospital in Rohini and a mother to two children.
Her daughter Shreya was found dead in a narrow lane between two row of houses, barely 200 meters from her home, on Thursday morning. Shreya’s school senior, Sarthak Kapoor, 18, has been arrested for the killing, which cops said might have been a result of jealousy.
“My daughter was physically weak and a thin girl. She must have screamed out to me for help in her last moments. I feel so helpless and powerless,” her mother wailed.
Shreya was a bright student who scored 10 CGPA in her Class 10 board exam. “She would frequently win maths and science competitions,” said her father, Yogesh, a banker.
The family alleged that 18-year-old Kapoor, currently a BCA student, had been threatening any male student who would try to befriend Shreya. Despite having finished his schooling earlier this year, Kapoor would allegedly visit her school and threaten other boys who spoke to Shreya.
Though Shreya’s father told the media that the victim and Kapoor were friends, the accused youth and his parents have told police that the two were ‘in a relationship’.
“In his statement, the girl’s father has said that he learnt of their friendship last April and that the two would sometimes meet,” said an officer, without commenting on the nature of the relationship. Shreya Sharma leaves for tuitions. However, she meets Sarthak Kapoor midway and goes to a park near her home. Shreya’s parents call Sarthak to ask about her whereabouts. The boy feigns ignorance and joins the search along with Shreya’s parents and other friends. The duo get in an argument in the park first. Sarthak then takes Shreya to an alley next to the park. They indulge in a scuffle there. Sarthak assaults Shreya. But when the needle of suspicion points towards him, he is interrogated by the police during which he confesses to the murder. Shreya is pushed to a wall where Sarthak chokes her to death with his elbow. He later flees the spot.
