‘Drunk’ man drives over pedestrian­s, kills 12-yr-old in Gzb

GHAZIABAD: Ghaziabad Police on Sunday registered a case against a man for driving under the influence of alcohol and mowing down nearly a dozen pedestrian­s on Saturday.

The incident had led to the death of a 12-year-old boy.

The driver, identified as Dilip Kumar, was injured in the incident and admitted to a hospital. He has been detained by the police and will be arrested after he is released.

On Saturday night, a Wagon R allegedly driven by Dilip, a resident of Shakti Khand II, hit several pedestrian­s, a motorcycle and finally came to a halt after hitting an autoricksh­aw near Gyan Khand in Indirapura­m.

One of the four persons on the motorcycle, Akhist Kumar, died after the bike was hit from behind by the car.

According to police, the 12-year-old suffered severe head injuries and died before he could be rushed to a hospital.

“We have detained the driver of the car. He has been booked under Section 304A , ” said Rakesh Kumar Mishra, circle officer (Indirapura­m). According to police, Dilip was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the car after the first hit .

“The Wagon R driven by Dilip Kumar lost control and hit people who were heading to attend Dussehra celebratio­ns. The man was found to be driving the car under the influence of alcohol. We will arrest him once he recovers,” said a police officer.

According to police, Dilip works as a manager with a private firm in Gurgaon.

“I saw the car hitting a bike and then it went ahead and hit an auto. The auto driver and passengers also sustained injuries. After the car stopped, locals pulled out the driver and thrashed him. There were a total of 7-8 persons who sustained severe injuries during the incident. The police later took away the driver,” said Shivam, a local vendor.

The police said that the out-ofcontrol car first hit pedestrian Mayank Updhyaya, his wife Neelam, son Naman and another pedestrian Mayank Mohan Pandey.

Then, it hit the motorcycle driven by Dinesh Kumar. Dinesh, his wife Anju and their son Aksh, 10, sustained multiple injuries, while their elder son Askhit died in the accident.
