NEWDELHI: A 60-year-old security guard was found murdered in the guard room of a warehouse belonging to a plastic granules manufacturing factory in Mundka on Sunday morning.

Police said the security guard was murdered allegedly by a group of robbers for resisting a robbery attempt. They suspect the involvement of a gang that commits robberies and burglaries in the godowns of Delhi NCR.

Pankaj Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer), said Bajrang Singh, who hailed from Rajasthan, was apparently smothered by the killers. “There were no visible injury marks on Singh’s body. We are, however, waiting for Singh’s autopsy report to ascertain the exact cause of death. The body has been preserved at a government hospital’s mortuary. The post-mortem examination will be conducted on Monday,” said the DCP.

The crime, the DCP added, came to light around 9am when a shopkeeper who runs a paan-tobacco kiosk near the godown came to meet the security guard and found him lying unconscious in the room. The shopkeeper raised an alarm and alerted the locals, and the police control room was informed.

A police team reached and rushed Singh to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on admission. A case of murder was registered at the Mundka police station and investigation was taken up.

According to the shopkeeper’s statement, Singh used to come to his shop daily in the morning to chew paan. But on Sunday, when Singh did not come till 8.30am, the shopkeeper went to check on him, police said.

Investigators said they were analysing the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area for clues about the killers.

They are probing whether Singh was murdered for preventing a robbery in the godown or the assailants attempted to rob him of his belongings. The police have not ruled out personal enmity motive.
