BAREILLY: An assistant sub inspector of police in Rampur was sent to prison for an alleged rape attempt on a 7-year-old girl inside a police post. The incident took place on Saturday night and the accused was sent to prison on Sunday.

“The accused Tejveer Singh was posted at a police post under Kemri police station. He was suspended after preliminary investigation and eventually sent to prison,” said Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rampur Vipin Tada. “We have also registered and FIR and initiated investigation,” he added.

According to a police complaint filed by the family members of the girl, she was playing near the police post when the accused lured him inside the police post. “Tejveer forcefully undressed the girl and tried to force himself on her,” reads the complaint.

Based on the complaint, police have charged Singh under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including section 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). However, they have not charged him under POCSO (Prevention of Children from Sexual Offenses) act.

Reportedly, an alert police constable posted at the site of the incident alerted the villagers who surrounded the post.

The SP and circle inspector of the area reached the post after the incident and detained Singh. “A team from Kemri police station interrogated Tejveer in presence of a senior official today (Sunday) before he was sent to prison,” said the SP. “I have asked the team to complete the investigation at the earliest,” he added.
