NEWDELHI: An 18-year-old class 12 student of a government school died after he was hit by a speeding train in northeast Delhi’s Shahdara on Monday afternoon, police said.

The police identified the student by his first name, Arbaz, saying that he lived with his family in Loha Mandi area in northeast Delhi’s Welcome.

The accident took place around 1.30pm on railway tracks near Kanti Nagar in Shahdara. It was only after a passerby spotted the teenager’s body and called the police, the incident got reported to the police control room, said Ashok Malik, additional deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi), who is also looking after the charge of DCP (railways).

Malik said that a pair of earphones was recovered from Arbaz’s possession. Asked if Abraz had his earphones plugged into his ears or if he was taking selfie with his mobile phone, two common causes for such accidents, the officer said that they did not find any mobile phone either from the accident site or from the possession of the teenager. The additional DCP also confirmed that there was no eyewitness of the train accident.

“Since nobody witnessed the accident, we cannot comment on the circumstances under which the teenager died. What is confirmed is that he was hit by a train. There is a possibility that he was crossing the tracks and failed to see the train approaching him,” said Malik.
