NEW DELHI: A goldsmith allegedly made off with gold and diamonds worth nearly ₹1 crore after serving drug-laced sweets and alcohol to his fellow workers at a processing unit in central Delhi’s Regarpura, Karol Bagh, two days ago.

The suspect, Surjit Manna, drugged his 13 fellow workers Saturday night. He was treating them for his ‘son’s birthday’. After his colleagues fell unconscious, he decamped with the gold.

The missing 3,350 grams gold was either i n process for remoulding or ready jewellery. The unit is run by Kaushik Goswami and Manna had been working for him for the past four years.

“When I reached the shop on Sunday morning, I found all employees were asleep. On taking a closer look, I realised that they were unconscious. I went to check the counters in which the gold is usually stored. All counters were empty,” said Goswami in his complaint. The only person missing was Manna.

DCP central MS Randhawa said efforts are on to trace Manna, who hails from West Bengal.
