What you need to do:

-

Cut about 10-12 inches-long wax paper off the roll. Fold and cut the paper in half length-wise. Fold each half in half again width-wise so you now have two sheets to work with that are about 5x10-12 with a folded seam.

Sprinkle the crayon shavings on one side of the wax paper.

Fold the wax paper over with the shavings inside. Place on a piece of scrap or newspaper, then cover with another piece of paper.

With your iron on medium heat, run it across the paper with a small amount of pressure. This should melt the crayon shavings and fuse the wax paper together. Glue the craft sticks together to make a square. Tape the sheet to the inside of the frames.

Form a cube from the frames and tape edges so that all the frames are connected. Add a battery powered tea light inside.

With a few simple supplies, you can create a beautiful colourful lantern and decorate your home.

The Monastery of the Dominicans of Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

It is one of the best and original examples of Late Gothic architecture in Portugal, inter mingled with the Manueline style.

The monastery was built over a century, starting in 1386 and ending circa 1517, spanning the reign of seven kings. The design of the monastery reflects the visions of several architects over the decades and the shift in emphasis from Gothic to Manueline.

The ceiling has an eight-point starshaped lantern. The most impressive feature of the monastery is the enormous medieval tomb of Dom João I and his wife, Queen Philippa of Lancaster, at the centre of the chapel. Bays in the chapel walls contain the tombs of their sons, among them Prince Henry the Navigator.

The ornate convent is made of limestone from Porto de Mós which has turned ochre in the course of time. It has an original Portuguese style, a mixture of rayonnant and flamboyant Gothic architecture combined with strong elements of English Perpendicular that has few parallels in Europe. As with all Dominican churches, this church has no bell tower.

Batalha probably had the first workshop for stained-glass windows in Portugal. The art was introduced in Portugal by German artists from Franconia and Nuremberg. The oldest windows date back to the end of the 1430s.

While the monastery escaped the devastation of the 1755 earthquake, it was badly damaged during the Peninsula War in1810 when Napoleonic troops ransacked the monastery. In the following years the building fell apart, but King Fernando II initiated the restoration in 1840.

It was declared a national monument in 1907. In 1980 the monastery was turned into a museum. The Unesco included the Batalha convent to its list of World Heritage sites in 1983.
