NEW DELHI: L-G Anil Baijal on Monday sought a report within 15 days from civic agencies on spaces where stack parking could be set up along with a timeline of its construction.

Reviewing the plan for providing more parking sites in Delhi, Baijal at a meeting, asked the three municipal corporations to conduct a mapping exercise to gauge the scope and requirement f or additional parking. He further asked agencies to consider surface parking only as a last resort and in areas where stack parking is not feasible, said an official who attended the meeting.

Asked about the Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking Rules, 2017, transport department officials informed the L-G that the file was with the law department for its final review.

The Delhi Development Authority is also going to prepare an action plan for setting up around 400 stack parking facilities.

The total number of vehicles in Delhi has crossed the onecrore mark, leading to chaos on roads owing to lack of authorised parking spaces. Transport department officials said the rate of increase of vehicles in Delhi is almost 6% per year.

The city’s urban development minister Satyendar Jain suggested in the meeting that malls could be asked to offer their parking sites at night to residents living in nearby colonies. Citing the example of Netaji Subhash Place, he pointed out that building owners are allowing commercial activities in stilt parking areas.

He urged the MCDS to begin a drive against such illegal activities.

The South corporation informed that it has identified 19 sites for multi-level parking, whereas, the North corporation said it has 13 such locations and that it has four stack parking sites in the pipeline.
