NEW DELHI: The re-election of India’s Justice Dalveer Bhandari to the International Court of Justice on Tuesday triggered jubilation in the ruling Bjp-led National Democratic Alliance with its leaders calling the 70-year-old’s re-appointment a ‘huge diplomatic win’ for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

BJP president Amit Shah said Bhandari’s victory in the ICJ election reflected “the diplomatic success” of the Modi government. “With every step and effort of the Modi Government, we see the reflection of a strong and decisive leadership. I applaud Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister Smt. Sushma Swaraj for this huge diplomatic win,” he tweeted.

Prime Minister Modi hailed Justice Bhandari’s re-election as “a proud moment for us” and credited external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj for his re-appointment. “Congratulations to EAM Sushma Swaraj and her entire team at MEA & diplomatic missions for their untiring efforts that have led to India’s re-election to ICJ. Our deep gratitude to all the members of UNGA as well as UNSC for their support and trust in India,” he wrote on Twitter.

Swaraj also congratulated Bhandari on his re-election, as she spoke of the “huge efforts” by team MEA and gave a ‘special mention’ to India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Syed Akbaruddin. “Vande Matram - India wins election to the International Court of Justice. Jaihind. #ICJ,” she wrote on Twitter.

Justice Bhandari was elected for a second term as judge at ICJ after UK’S candidate withdrew following a hard-fought battle. Based at The Hague, Netherlands, the 15-member world court is the UN’S top judicial organ that works towards resolving disputes between countries.
