NEERAJ BAWANA MOVES COURT AGAINST SOLITARY CONFINEMENT
NEWDELHI: A city court has sought response from Tihar Jail on the plea of jailed gangster Neeraj Sehrawat, better known as Neeraj Bawana, to remove him from solitary confinement.
Bawana is an undertrial prisoner and currently lodged in Central Jail, Tihar.
The application, filed by advocate MS Khan on behalf of the accused, states that the jail authorities have “segregated the accused in solitary confinement from past two weeks.”
Further, the plea states that being kept in solitary confinement is in violation of the directions of the Supreme Court and the fundamental rights of the accused.
“It is, therefore, prayed that necessary directions shall be issued to the jail authorities to remove the applicant (Bawana) from solitary confinement and restore his fundamental rights,” reads the application.
The plea also states that Bawana is allegedly deprived of basic necessities such as books, which are available to other inmates. Earlier, Bawana had filed a complaint regarding inhuman condition inside the jail premises. He had told the court that the cells stink and inmates are given substandard food.
Bawana, along with nine others, is facing trial under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for allegedly running an organised crime syndicate.
In its chargesheet, police said that all the accused were running a crime syndicate to commit extortion and murders, apart from land grabbing.
