Former TV host Suhaib Ilyasi convicted for wife’s murder
CHARGED Ilyasi, who hosted crime series ‘India’s Most Wanted’, allegedly stabbed his wife in 2000 but claimed it was suicide. In 2014, his motherinlaw demanded he be tried for murder
NEWDELHI: A Delhi court on Saturday convicted former television serial producer and anchor Suhaib Ilyasi, the host of the once popular television serial ‘India’s Most Wanted’ in the 90s, for the murder of his wife Anju Ilyasi 17 years ago.
Arguments on the quantum of punishment will be heard on December 20.
Advocate Satender Sharma, counsel for Anju’s mother Rukma Singh, who is the complainant in the case, said, “The trial court has convicted Suhaib Ilyasi for his wife’s murder. The section 302 (murder) was added after the Supreme Court dismissed Suhaib Ilyasi’s appeal challenging the Delhi high court order of inclusion of section 302 in the case.”
Anju Ilyasi was found dead in her east Delhi residence with multiple stab injuries in January, 2000.
Suhaib told the police that Anju had committed suicide after an argument. He was arrested on March 28, 2000, after charges of dowry were added to the case after his sister-in-law Rashmi Singh and mother-inlaw Rukma Singh alleged that Anju was tortured and harassed for dowry.
Later, Anju’s mother moved an application in the trial court seeking inclusion of murder charges against Suhaib but it was dismissed in 2011. Then she moved the high court, which ordered framing of murder charges against her son-in-law Suhaib in August 2014.
Suhaib then approached the Supreme Court challenging the HC ruling but the apex court dismissed his plea.
Advocate Manu Sharma, counsel for Suhaib, told Hindustan times that he was going to appeal against the trial court judgment in the high court.
“We have not received the court order copy yet. We can expect it only by Monday. We will file an appeal after examining t he j udgment,” Sharma said.
Section 302 (murder) was added after the SC dismissed Suhaib’s appeal challenging the Delhi HC order of inclusion of the section in the case.
