NEW DELHI: Suhaib Ilyasi was once the famous host of television serial ‘India’s Most Wanted’. It was one of the popular shows of the ‘90s, making Ilyasi a household name on the small screen.

However, Ilyasi’s life changed after his wife, Anju (27), died in the evening of January 10, 2000, reportedly due to stab injuries in her abdomen. But the police came to know a day later about her death after she was declared brought dead at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

The case hogged the light as it involved an anchor-producer of a crime-busting television show. Ilyasi had met Anju at Jamia Millia Islamia when both of them were pursuing mass communication in 1989. They got married in London in 1993.

Ilyasi is the son of Jameel Ilyasi, who was the head of All India Imams Organisation and the imam of a mosque in central Delhi.

Anju’s father was KP Singh, then head of metallurgy department in IIT Kanpur.

After Anju’s death, her family initially allegedly said that Ilyasi was a good son-in-law. Her father reportedly told the police that his daughter was of temperamental nature and he did not suspect a murder.

Police filed the case as a sui- cide on January 17, 2000. However, a month later, Anju’s sister filed a police complaint saying that Anju was tortured for dowry and she was driven to suicide.

Relations soured between Ilyasi and his in-laws. After his wife’s death, Ilyasi also got involved in a legal battle with his in-laws for the custody of his daughter.

He also moved the court against a decision of the police to form a fresh medical panel to ascertain the nature of his wife’s death.

He alleged that the formation of the medical board was illegal since it was being done after framing of charges for the offence of dowry death.
