NEW DELHI: Unable to conceive even 10 years after her marriage, a 28-year-old woman allegedly kidnapped a 13-day-old baby boy with the help of her sister, 22, who is the aunt of the toddler.

The kidnapping took place on December 12, 2017, in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri from the home of the toddler’s mother, who is the sister-in-law of the kidnapper’s sister.

On Tuesday, the child was safely rescued from the rented home of the kidnapper in Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh. Both sisters , Firdaus and Sophia (names changed), were arrested.

Police said Sophia, who lived with her in-laws in Delhi’s Shastri Park, drugged the toddler’s parents, her husband, and other family members before allowing Firdaus to come inside the home and take the baby away. The two sisters were planning the kidnapping for almost a year, soon after Sophia learnt that her sister-inlaw was pregnant.

As per their plan, Firdaus too informed her husband and in-laws that she was pregnant, though nobody knew that she was lying, said Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (northwest). Firdaus then returned to her parental home after giving an excuse to her in-laws that her parents would take a good care of her during the pregnancy, said the DCP.

The two sisters took a flat on rent on Sahibabad and Firdaus started living there alone. She did not meet her husband or in-laws after she left their home, said police. On November 30 last month, Sophia’s sister-in-law gave birth to a boy at their home. While a celebration started at the child’s home, Sophia informed Firdaus about the delivery.

A day later, Firdaus also informed her husband and in-laws that she gave birth to a baby boy. Firdaus told her in-laws that she will return home with the boy after a couple of months, said police. DCP Khan said that eight teams were formed to solve the kidnapping case and rescue the toddler. The teams questioned the child’s family members, relatives, neighbours, and other suspects. Their phone calls records were also examined. “The location of Firdaus was tracked and the baby was rescued,” said Khan.
