ROHTAK : As many as 157 dhabas along National Highway 1 in Murthal and Rai could be razed down for flouting norms in construction and change of land use permission, officials said on Tuesday.

The dhabas, famous across north India for their paranthas and other roadside delicacies, were issued notices by the municipal corporation in October. An inspection for the highway expansion found illegal construction and encroachment by these dhabas.

Initially, the dhabas were given a seven-day notice, asking to produce valid documents. Then, the administration gave them over two month’s time to come out clean or pay fines.

“These dhabas constructed in controlled area were issued notices, following which, their owners had requested time to complete documents or pay fine. That time is now over and action against these dhabas is likely soon,” Sonepat deputy commissioner KM Pandurang said on Tuesday.

Murthal dhabas are favourite stop for commuters travelling on NH-1 and young Delhiites who throng these joints late night for food.
