AMETHI: Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath have a habit of “lying” and delivering “long speeches” but they do nothing to keep the promises made in those speeches, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said in a frontal attack on the two BJP leaders in his parliamentary constituency Amethi on Monday.

Gandhi, on his first visit to Congress strongholds of Rae Bareli and Amethi after assuming the reins of the party, said, “People in BJP are telling lies, one after the other. Whether it is a lie about (depositing) ~15 lakh in the bank account of every citizen or giving remunerative prices to farmers for their produce or construction of roads.”

At a public gathering in Salon, he listed out farmers committing suicide and potato farmers throwing away their produce as impacts of the government denying them the promised fair and remunerative prices (FRP).

Gandhi also assured people he would ensure the restoration of Mega Food Park and other development projects once Congress returns to power in the state. “I want to say one thing. Come what may, food park will be set up here (in Amethi). As soon as our government is formed, whether it is the sugarcane farmer, potato farmer or a farmer who grows other crops, your produce will be sold here, and you will get a hand- some price,” he said.

Gandhi also took potshots at Modi’s oft-repeated “Gujarat model of development”. “Ninety per cent of universities in Gujarat are in private hands. Students there say they need to pay ~15 lakh to get admission,” he said, adding that 30 lakh unemployed youth in Gujarat are demanding jobs but Modi was silent.
