Gold rush for Indian boxers
NEW DELHI: Indian boxers dominated the Nation’s Cup for junior and youth women, claiming 11 gold in all and both the team championship trophies in Sombor, Serbia. The junior team won 13 medals — nine gold, two silver and two bronze medals —, while the youth team clinched four medals — three gold and a bronze.
In junior category, Ekta Saroj (46kg), Baby Rozisana Chanu (52), Poonam (54), Arundhati Choudhary (60), Vinka (63), Mitika Gunele (66), Raj Sahiba (70), Sanamacha Chanu (75) and Komal (+80), were the gold winners.
Sanjeeta (48) and Lipakshi won silver, while Arshi Khanam (50) and Yashi Sharma (57) settled for bronze. In youth category, Jony (60), Lalita (64) and Nandini (81) won gold. Rajbala (54) was the lone bronze-medallist.
COORG IN QUARTERS
IMPHAL: MB Cariappa struck twice as Hockey Coorg notched up a 3-1 win over Bengal Hockey Association to secure a spot in the quarter-final of the Hockey India Senior Men’s National Championship. Punjab National Bank secured their quarter-final berth after winning their third consecutive match in Pool F with a 8-1 thrashing of Hockey Himachal.
SERVICES CHAMPS
NEW DELHI: Services claimed the men’s title in the National Cross Country Championships held on Sunday in Goa. The women’s trophy went to Railways. Services runner Shankar Man Thapa took the top honours in men’s 10km, while in women’s race, Sanjeevani Babu of Maharashtra was first, followed by Lalita Babar and Swati Gadhave of Railways.
CHIKARA TO LEAD
NEWDELHI: Defender Nitesh Chikara of Garhwal Heroes will lead a 20- member Delhi State team for the Senior National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy scheduled from January 15 at Greater Noida. Forward Shaheen John of Hindustan FC will be the vice captain.
