NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Wednesday arrested a 31-yearold man from Jahangirpuri for allegedly murdering his wife and her 18-month-old son at their residence in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri two days ago.

Following his arrest, the accused, Om Prakash, told the police that he had been planning to kill his wife Shobha and the child, who he claims is not his son, for the past five to six months. An investigator said he had even brought the murder weapon, a dagger, about 20 days ago and hidden it in the house.

“We arrested Om Prakash on Wednesday morning after a tip of was received that he was spotted at Khera Kalan Railway Station. Prakash was planning to escape,” said DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan.

Prakash told the police that his wife had an alleged extra-marital affair for the past two years.

“There was no specific person he suspected to be her lover but he would often accuse her of infidelity. Since the birth of her youngest child, their fights had intensified. He told us that because of the frequent fights and the fact that they rarely stayed under the same roof in the past two years, he was not ready to believe that the child he murdered was his,” said another investigator.

The couple had three children. Shobha and the kids often stayed with her parents and she had returned home just a week before the murder after Prakash’s father convinced her to return. “On Monday evening. When his wife and the three children went to sleep, he first hit the toddler on the head and then stabbed Shobha and hit her with a blunt object,” said the officer.
