NEWDELHI: The Delhi Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution against Central government’s decision to allow 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) in singlebrand retail.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti moved the proposal in the House which read: “The House resolves to oppose the decision of the Union cabinet to allow 100% FDI in retail (singlebrand) as it will break the back of small and medium traders and ultimately lead to economic slavery of the country.”

Delhi urban development minister Satyendar Jain said that business of around 10 million small shops in the country would be affected by the FDI.

Criticising the Centre for allowing FDI in the country, development minister Gopal Rai said that the BJP was once again trying to bring companies like “East India Company” in the country which occupied India in the name of doing business. Leader of the Opposition, Vijendar Gupta, however, defended the Centre’s decision and said that the FDI will improve the quality of products .

MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONERS SUMMONED

Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Wednesday asked the commissioners of all the three municipal corporations to appear before Special Committee of the House, which will look into the matters pertaining to sealing and conversion charge. AAP MLA Bhavana Gaur is the chairperson of the Committee.

HOMELESS PEOPLE

The issue of homeless people braving Delhi’s cold in the open rocked Delhi Assembly on Wednesday. The Opposition blamed the ruling AAP for deaths of the homeless due to cold, a charge denied by the govt.

Delhi urban development minister Satyendar Jain said in the House there were arrangements for 30,000 persons at night shelters, where 23,000 were staying at present. BJP MLAS, led by leader of opposition Vijender Gupta, raised the matter soon after the House assembled, demanding a discussion over the issue.
