GURGAON: To ensure violence over the movie Padmaavat does not spread further, the Gurgaon Police on Thursday evening detained Suraj Pal Amu, a suspended BJP leader, who is also the general secretary of the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, one of the organisations spearheading the opposition against the movie.

Although Amu has been taken into preventive custody for now, sources said he may face arrest in connection with the Bhondsi violence in which a Haryana Roadways bus was set ablaze and a school bus was reportedly attacked.

“There are indications that the violence in Bhondsi appeared well planned and executed meticulously and during the probe his links with the violence have surfaced”, said a police officer who is not authorised to speak to the media over the issue, adding that Amu was under the scanner for allegedly instigating the violence i n Bhondsi.

A school bus was attacked and a Haryana Roadways bus was set ablaze by a group of 50 to 60 men protesting the release of movie. Police officials said the violence appeared to have been meticulously planned and did not seem like a sporadic incident.

Amu was taken into custody by Gurgaon Police on Thursday evening from his apartment and taken to Sector 29 police station. He was booked under section 107, 151 of the CRPC and detained by the police to prevent any untoward incident from happening in the city.

A vocal critic of the movie and its director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Amu had allegedly announced a bounty of ₹10 crore for beheading Padmaavat lead actor Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He had also resigned from the BJP alleging that he was hurt by the fact that Haryana chief min- ister Manohar Lal Khattar had refused to meet Rajput leaders.

Lately, the Karni Sena leader had been working towards consolidating the Rajput community to oppose the release of the movie.

He had also gone to Mumbai, Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Jaipur in connection with protests being planned.

“The Gurgaon Police detained nine persons as a preventive measure including Suraj Pal Amu to maintain peace, and ensure there is no untoward incident”, said Ravinder Kumar, PRO, Gurgaon Police.
