GHAZIABAD : A 59-year-old Indian Railway employee ran 400 metres to a private hospital to seek help after being shot twice and hit with pistol butts by two robbers at a busy marketplace in Ghaziabad on Thursday.

Nobody offered help as Darshan Lal Saini fought with the two robbers resisting their bid to part with his bag, containing ₹50,000. The robbers had to flee as he put up a determined fight. Even after the robbers fled, a mob surrounded the victim but no one came forward to help him as he rushed to hospital to get medical attention.

The shocking incident of lawlessness and public apathy took place outside Punjab National Bank at Chaudhary Morh of Ambedkar Road in Ghaziabad on Thursday afternoon.

The victim was shot in the chest and hand twice by the two assailants after he withdrew ₹50,000 cash from a bank branch. His condition at the Ganesh Hospital, where he went to get medical attention, is said to be stable but one of the two bullets is still inside his body.

Saini works as a diesel fitter in the Indian Railways in New Delhi. He stays in Lal Kuan area of Ghaziabad.

According to his son, Suraj Saini, after the victim withdrew money from the bank at 12.45 pm, the two robbers followed him and demanded him to handover the money bag at gunpoint.

“When my father refused, they shot him in his chest. When my father tried to catch hold of the gun, they shot him in his right hand. The bullet went through.my father still clung on to the bag and refused to hand it over to them despite being shot twice. Yet, my father remained defiant,” said Suraj Saini.

Suraj said despite the fact that it was a busy road, nobody offered to help his father. “In fact, nobody showed the courtesy to take him to the hospital, which is located just 400 metres away from the crime spot,” he said.

“The bullet in chest has been stuck and the doctors will operate to take it out,” said Suraj.

Police have lodged a case against unknown persons under sections 394 and 511 of the IPC. Nobody has been arrested so far.

“The footage shows that two men were inside the bank and followed Saini as he came out. No one offered help to Saini while he was being attacked,” said Manisha Singh, DSP, Ghaziabad.
