NEWDELHI: The Delhi Police recovered ₹60 lakh worth of jewellery that was allegedly stolen from a passenger of an air-conditioned compartment of the Ala Hazrat Express train near Old Delhi Railway Station last week.

Parwaiz Ahmed, deputy commissioner of police (railways), said it was the biggest recovery of a stolen item ever by the Delhi Police’s railway department.

The theft took place on February 13 when a passenger, Mridul Kotriwal, was preparing to get off the train at Old Delhi Railway Station. He was travelling in the train’s two tier compartment.

“Minutes before the train reached the station, a stranger befriended Kotriwal and advised him to move his luggage to the gates so that it would be easy to deboard,” said the DCP.

As he moved his luggage, three-four men gathered around him and raised a commotion, distracting him. But when Kotriwal checked his luggage later, he found that jewellery worth ₹60 lakh and ₹90,000 in cash was missing. The bag had been cut from the side and a small bag containing the jewellery had been stolen.

Police focused the probe on gangs operating with this modus operandi. “We received a tip-off that the thief would be visiting Sultanpuri in outer Delhi. On being confronted, the suspect tried to run with the jewellery, but we caught him,” said the DCP.

The man was identified as 35-year-old Rajender, a resident of Sultanpuri. He has revealed the identities of his associates and efforts are on to nab them and recover the stolen cash.
