NEWDELHI: The Delhi government schools will start baseline assessment of students in Class 2 to 4 and check their reading abilities and basic Mathematics skills from Saturday.

The assessment results will be used to implement the ‘Buniyaad’ scheme from April to enhance reading and numeracy skills of students in primary classes.

The government has sent four samples of reading and Mathematics practices, for each class, that schools need to use for assessment. The directorate of education (DOE) has asked teachers to randomly use one of the four samples given to them. “Motivate the child to read, if the child can read it comfortably move to story. If the child can read the story comfortably, he/ she can be marked at Story level,” a circular issued by DOE said.

The circular said that if a child cannot read a paragraph comfortably, then he/she should be asked to read any five words from the tool, which is a level below. “If the child can read at least four words, record it at word level otherwise move to the letters,” it said.

If the child cannot do any of the steps, then the child will be recorded at the beginner level.

Similarly, in Maths, the student will be asked to do two subtractions and if both are correct then the student will be moved to division exercises. If the student can do one division then she will be recorded at the division level.

“If one or two subtraction is incorrect, the student will be asked to identify five double-digit numbers. The student should be able to identify at least four numbers and if not then she will be recorded as a beginner,” the circular said.

The DOE has asked teachers to complete the assessment by March 5 and submit it online.

The assessment will be used as the baseline for Class 3 to 5 and appropriate activities to enhance the basic proficiency in Hindi, Urdu and Maths will start from April 2 when the new session begins. The move comes after the National Achievement Survey found most Class 3 and 5 students in government and aided schools performed abysmally in science, mathematics and language.
