Mary Kom in final, Vikas enters semis

SOFIA: MC Mary Kom advanced to the finals, while Vikas Krishan and two other male boxers entered the semi-finals at the 69th Strandja Memorial Tournament on Friday. Mary Kom beat China’s Ye Jiali to make the summit clash. In the men’s draw Vikas Krishan, Satish Kumar and Gaurav Solanki advanced to the semi-finals to assure themselves of medals. While Gaurav beat Kyrgyzstan’s Azat Usenaliev, Vikas ousted Kazakhstan’s Tursynbay Kulakhmet.

JITHIN PAUL BANNED

NEWDELHI: Athlete Jithin Paul has been banned for four years after National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) found that the hurdler was in possession of a banned substance ‘Meldonium’. Paul becomes first Indian athlete to be sanctioned for such an offence.

SHARMA MISSES CUT

DOHA: Shubhankar Sharma and SSP Chawrasia made an exit from the Qatar Masters as both missed the cut. Shubhankar followed up his first round 69 with a second round 72, while Chawrasia managed only 71.

SHARMILA TIED 22ND

BONVILLE: Sharmila Nicollet made the cut despite a 4-over 76 in the second round of the Australian Ladies Classic Bonville. Sharmila had an eagle on par-5 seventh, but also dropped a double on par-3 third besides four other bogeys. She is now tied-32nd.

LAHIRI SLIPS, TIGER PAR

PALM BEACH GARDENS: Anirban Lahiri ended the birdie-less first round at three-over 73 at the Honda Classic. Lahiri had three bogeys, two of them on the last two holes. He was tied-69th. Former world No 1 Tiger Woods shot par that to be tied-21st.

CYCLING TEAM FOR CWG

NEW DELHI: The Cycling Federation of India on Friday announced the team for Commonweal­th Games to be held in Gold Coast, Australia. The Indian squad will have nine members -- five women and four men.
