SPACE SETTLEMENT DESIGN CONTEST

-

Amity International School, Saket, has entered the finals of the Indian National Space Settlement Design Competition.

Under the guidance of group chairperson Dr Amita Chauhan, Amity students are provided multidimensional experiences such as this competition which help them achieve academic excellence and understand global issues. In the Regional Space Settlement Design Competition, high school students had to design a city in space that will be home to over 10,000 people. Student engineers demonstrated creativity, technical competence, management skills, space environment knowledge, teamwork and presentation techniques to solve the problems associated with designing a space settlement. Each year, the competition organisers from Nasa and Boeing present a new challenge to students. The student teams work together to create a 40-page report that addresses the issues and communicates their ideas and designs. This year, the teams designed the first large space settlement community in orbit around the Earth’s Moon.

Sixteen finalist teams from around the world will be selected to compete with a new scenario in a live competition at Nasa Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with real engineers sharing their knowledge and experience in both engineering and management.

This event teaches management skills and real-time industry skills that most people spend decades to learn in the industry while on the job.

One need not be a whiz-kid, academically very successful or brilliant in physics and mathematics to do well in this competition.
