DU seminar on classical music
NEWDELHI: With increasing interest abroad in Indian classical music forms, the Department of Music of Delhi University is holding a two-day International Seminar in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) with focus on “Indian Classical Music: Teaching and Performing Abroad” from Tuesday.
Eminent musicians will participate in discussions spread over five sessions.
The seminar will not just be about discussing various aspects of music. Participants would also be treated to performances by leading artistes — including well known husband — wife duo of Pandit Shubhendra Rao (Sitar) and Dr Sakia Rao-de Haas (Cello) accompanied on Tabla by Shailendra Mishra.
On the concluding day, there will be a Tala Vadya concert by well-known Mridangam exponent Vidwan N. Padmanabhan and his group of Karnatak percussion artistes. The finale will be a Hindustani Classical Vocal recital by Ms Kalapini Komkali, daughter of late Maestro Pandit Kumar Gandharva of the Gwal- ior Gharana.
The topics to be discussed at the sessions include: Teaching and performance of Hindustani Classical Instrumental Music, Karnatak Classical Music and Hindustani Classical Percussion Music abroad.
The guest of honour at the seminar will be Mrs Riva Ganguly Das, Director General, ICCR. The key note address will be by Professor Joep Bor of Academy of Creative and Performing Arts, Leiden University,the Netherlands.
