NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have arrested a man who they claim was ‘actively involved’ in the killing of a school principal and her brother along the Delhi-haryana border on Monday.

The accused, identified as Ranjeet, had joined the murder conspiracy after being promised a heavy sum of money that he wanted to use in his wedding scheduled for later this year, said Shibesh Singh, deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka).

The principal, 45-year-old Anita Yadav, was gunned down in front of her husband and minor son in their school premises in Gumanhera village in outer Delhi’s Chhawla on Monday night. The body of her brother, Jai Kishan, was found in nearby Jhajjar district of Haryana on Tuesday morning.

The duo has been running the Rachna Public School, a private institution, for the past two decades. Kishan managed the school’s transport department.

The family had alleged that the killers were led by a co-villager, Naveen Yadav, with whom the family was involved in a dispute over six bighas of land.

With Ranjeet’s arrest from outer Delhi on Friday, police said they now have a clue about the sequence of events that led to the killing on Monday.

“The three men involved in the murders had intercepted Kishan on Monday evening and lured him to drink liquor with them. After Kishan was heavily drunk, they had driven to the school. While Naveen and one other suspect barged into the school and shot dead the principal, Ranjeet had waited in a car outside. Kishan was too drunk to resist or even realise what was happening,” said the DCP.

The pistol used by the duo jammed after they shot Anita. The killers then escaped and drove to Badsa village in Jhajjar, less than 10 kilometres from Gumanhera. “There they shot dead Kishan and threw him in some agricultural fields along an isolated stretch of muddy road,” said the DCP.

Police said an informer tipped them off about Ranjeet’s hideout, leading to his arrest. “Ranjeet’s engagement was to take place within a few weeks and his wedding was scheduled for later this year. Since he needed money, Naveen lured him to be a part of the murders,” said the DCP.
