South and east corps surpass property tax target
NEW DELHI : The financial year 2017-18 proved to be a good one for South and East Delhi Municipal Corporation as far as property tax collection is concerned.
The fund-starved East Delhi Municipal Corporation, which is not able to pay salaries to staff in time, performed well compared to the previous year.
Ranbir Singh, EDMC commissioner said, “Property tax collection has seen a jump of 30-35 % this year over the last year. In 2017-18, we collected property tax of R 237 crore while in 2016-17, R183 crore was collected.”
“We expect to reach R250 crore,” he Singh. He said the EDMC had organised around 175 property tax collection camps where R 25 crore was collected. Besides, R 15 crore property tax was collected from unauthorised colonies of East Delhi.
“We worked hard from the beginning and collected tax from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (R10 crore) and Delhi Transco Limited (R 12 crore). This was in addition to bringing 20,000 new property taxpayers in tax net,” said senior EDMC official.
The South Delhi Municipal Corporation collected property tax more than the target for third consecutive year, an official said. “An amount of R 691 crore was collected against a target of R 650 crore till March 31,” he said.
