THE ACCUSED WAS BEATEN UP WITH A STICK BY THE VICTIM’S MOTHER. LATER, SOME NEIGHBOURS TOO ROUGHED HIM UP BEFORE HANDING HIM OVER TO THE POLICE

NEW DELHI: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly molested by her 34-year-old tenant inside her home in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the accused, who is a contractual employee in Safdarjung Hospital, was later beaten up with a stick by the girl’s mother. Some neighbours too roughed him up before handing him over to the local police.

A police officer said the accused lived with his wife and a two-year-old daughter on rent on the first floor, while the girl’s family — who own the place — lived on the ground floor. The girl is a Class 8 student in a private school in Sangam Vihar.

According to a neighbour, the incident took place around 2.30pm on Wednesday when the girl’s mother and the tenant’s wife had gone to visit a nearby hospital for some medical checkup. The girl was alone in the house when the accused allegedly came home and asked the girl about his wife and her family members.

“She told him that they had gone to a hospital. He then called his wife on her mobile and she told him that they will take some time to return. The man then went inside his flat,” said the neighbour.

Later, he came down again and found the girl watching television. He then went and asked her for a glass of water. As the girl went in to the kitchen, the man allegedly followed her and grabbed her from behind. Shocked, the girl immediately pushed him away and rushed out. The man still followed her and allegedly continued touching her inappropriately, even as she continued resisting his attempts.

“The girl somehow escaped and ran to her friend’s home nearby. After her mother returned home, she told her about the incident. The girl’s mother then confronted the man and even beat him up with a stick,” the neighbour added.

One of the neighbours later called the police. “We booked the tenant for molesting the minor girl. A case was registered on the complaint of the girl’s family. He was arrested and produced before a city court that sent him to jail,” the officer said.
