NEWDELHI: A six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted, allegedly by her 58-year-old neighbour in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri on Monday.

This is the fourth case of rape, involving a minor girl, reported since Sunday.

In Monday’s case, police said the girl’s family accused the 58-year-old man of allegedly having raped her twice, first on April 11 and then again on April 23. Police said that they did not initially file a complaint because the man had apologised for his crime. An officer said that on Monday, the child was playing outside her home when the 58-year-old man lured her to his room and offering to play with her.

Her family alleged that the man then forced himself on her and later threatened her not to tell anyone about the incident.

“The girl returned home and mustered courage enough to tell her parents about the incident. Her family members immediately went to the elderly man’s home but found him missing,” said a senior officer.

Police said the girl’s mother admitted the girl to a nearby government hospital when she complained of pain in her lower abdomen. She was medically examined. At the hospital, doctors confirmed rape after which the police were informed .

“We raided the possible hideouts of the suspect and nabbed him on Tuesday. He was produced before a city court ,” the officer said, adding t he alleged rapist worked as an e-rickshaw driver, till threefour years ago.

Police said that the girl’s father is a driver by profession. She is a student at a local government school.

An officer, associated with the case, said the local police had approached the girl’s family after their informer told them about the first alleged sexual assault on the minor girl.

The girl’s family, however, refused to submit a complaint, saying nothing had happened to their daughter.

“We are also probing why and under what circumstances the girl’s family refused to file the complaint. The role of some other neighbours are also under scanner,” the officer said. Police said the probe will be completed soon and the chargesheet will be filed in 20 days.
