NEWDELHI: The Delhi government will soon hire an agency to promote Delhi as a tourist-friendly destination on the Internet, especially social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

The tourism department of Delhi government has prepared a plan under which it will undertake several initiatives — one of which includes hiring of a professional social media agency. “There are millions of people who are on the Internet for a significant part of the day nowadays and the government realised that this chunk currently is completely untapped. So, Delhi government will begin tourism advertisements for the Internet soon,” said an official privy to the development.

As part of the plan, the Delhi government will also produce five short videos and six radio jingles to promote tourism in the national capital. Apart from this, “tourist literature” will also be published, the official said.

The idea was mooted by tourism minister Manish Sisodia who reportedly told officers that Delhi, which is home to several monuments, famous markets and temples, needs to be promoted on social media sites. Officials said governments of other states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan are already “very active” on social media sites to promote tourism in their areas.

“A social media agency will be hired by September this year. The scope of work includes branding Delhi as a tourist friendly destination on sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube. The social media agency will make plans and execute them for branding Delhi,” another official of the tourism department said.

As soon as it came to power in 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party government had invited ideas from senior bureaucrats, who have travelled abroad, to make Delhi an international tourist destination and increase the time tourists stay by giving them more options to explore the city.
