Bihar teen scores 691/720, tops NEET

NEW DELHI: Bihar’s Kalpana Kumari got 691 out of 720 marks or 99.99 percentile to secure the all-india rank (AIR) 1 in NEET 2018, the results declared by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) showed on Monday.

The 18-year-old Kumari, who is from Sheohar district and attended coaching classes in New Delhi, scored 171 marks out of 180 in physics, 160 in chemistry, and 360 out of 360 in biology, which combines botany and zoology, in the National Eligibilit­y-cum-entrance Test (NEET) 2018.

Despite several attempts, Kumari could not be contacted.

“She used to study daily for 12 hours on an average. She has also appeared for AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) entrance examinatio­n, results of which will be declared on June 18,” her sister Bharti said.

“She wishes to get into AIIMS, Delhi. Her second preference is Maulana Azad Medical College, Delhi,” Bharti added.

Kumari was a student of Navo- daya Vidyalaya in Sheohar in Class 10 and has appeared for Class 12 board examinatio­n conducted by Bihar board this year from YKJM College in Tariyani block.

The Bihar board results for Class 12 will be declared on June 6. Her father, Rakesh Mishra, is a lecturer in District Institute of Educationa­l Training in Sitamarhi and mother, Mamta Kumari, is a teacher in Government Girls’ Middle School in Sheohar.

Rohan Purohit from Telangana and Himanshu Sharma from Delhi stood joint second and third, scoring 690 marks.

The third rank was shared by Aarosh Dhamija from Delhi and Prince Chaudhary from Rajasthan, both of whom scored 686 marks. Ashish Vaibhav became the second topper from Bihar by securing AIR 291.

Anish Kumar Kushwaha from Madhubani secured AIR 300 as a general candidate and AIR 51 in the Other Backward Class category. He scored 631 out of 720 in - 312 in biology, 165 in physics and 160 in chemistry. He wants to get into Delhi’s Maulana Azad Medical College.

The board’s data showed out of over 12.69 lakh students, who appeared for the exam across the country, 7.14 lakh have qualified for admissions to 66,000 seats in medical and dental courses across the country.

The highest number of students who cleared NEET are from Uttar Pradesh, where 76,778 candidates qualified, followed by Kerala at 72,682, and 70,184 aspirants from Maharashtr­a.
