NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police on Wednesday sealed the house of the 62-year-old alleged leader of a Delhi crime family on the directions of a city court.

Police said Basiran has been on the run since she was named in a murder case. She had taken the murder contract for ₹60,000. Hindustan Times had on November 2, 2017, reported about the woman and her seven sons, all of whom were behind bars for crimes ranging from murder to extortion, robbery to theft.

Police say the woman is part of the water mafia in Sangam Vihar, one of the country’s largest unauthorised colonies, where drinking water is scarce and piped connections are hardly available.

Police said Basiran, earlier arrested for extortion, had come out on bail in September last year and had taken a contract of ₹60,000 for the murder. The case came to light on January 10 when police arrested three Sangam Vihar residents and a woman named Munni Begum for a man’s murder on November 15.

Begum told police she had paid the contract money to Basiran to kill her brother. Police said Basiran had kept ₹18,000 and given the remaining amount to the three men.

The three men had kidnapped Begum’s brother, killed him, disfigured his face and burnt his body in the jungles of Sangam Vihar. Police had then named Basiran as the main accused.

A senior police officer said Basiran has been declared a proclaimed offender by the court. A court declares a person a proclaimed offender when he/she fails to attend proceedings against him /her. Once a person is declared a PO, the court directs police to arrest the court.

Confirming that police have sealed the house and attached the woman’s property on the court’s direction, deputy commissioner of police(south) Romil Baaniya said, “The woman and her sons have many cases against them. Most of them are absconding. The whole area was fed up with them. In fact, when police sealed the house, most locals who were otherwise afraid to speak against them came forward and congratulated the police team.”

The woman had earlier moved the high court seeking interim bail, which was granted until the police submitted a case report to the court last month. She was asked to join investigation but has remained underground.

Basiran, originally from Rajasthan, has seven sons, aged between 15 and 38, who have around 100 criminal cases against them. As per police records, the woman drafted into crime in the early 2000s selling illicit liquor. With a family of 11, the woman and her teenage sons graduated to other crimes. Police accused her sons of running pickpocket gangs in the capital. NEWDELHI: The Delhi Police’s special cell has arrested a gangster allegedly involved in a double murder that took place earlier this month in Dwarka.

The accused, who is named in at least 10 cases, was arrested fol- lowing a brief exchange of fire in Dwarka on Tuesday. The accused was carrying a reward of ₹1 lakh on his arrest, police said. Police said the accused, Rajiv alias Monu, is a resident of Issapur in Delhi.

Deputy commissioner of police (special cell) Sanjeev Yadav said, “We recovered a loaded revolver from him. In 2015, he was arrested in a case registered under the Arms Act and was sent to jail. After his release from jail, he and his gangster friend Sandeep Mental bought a property in village Pochan Pur,” Yadav said. He said both carried out some construction at the property but soon fell out.
