Shiva, Mandeep punch their way to semis
NEWDELHI: Shiva Thapa (60kg) and Mandeep Jangra (69kg) were among the four Indian boxers to make the semi-finals as country’s tally of medals swelled to eight at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia.
Shiva, a World Championships bronze-medal winner, notched up a clinical win over Kyrgyzstan’s Ravshanbek to make the semi-finals. He will square off against local hope Battumur Misheelt in the last-four stage.
Also advancing was former Commonwealth Games silver- medallist Mandeep. He defeated Mongolian Batkhuyag Sukhkhuyag in his quarter-final bout.
Joining the established duo after recording victories in the afternoon session were debutant Vanhlimpuia (75kg) and Etash Khan (56kg). However, the experienced L Sarita Devi (60kg), a former world and Asian champion, lost a closely contested quarter-final bout to Chinese Taipei’s Shih Yu Wu.
SOLANKI IN FINAL
HALLE, GERMANY: India’s Gaurav Solanki stormed into the final of the Chemistry Cup boxing tournament after registering a thrilling win over Ireland’s Quinn Conor here. Gaurav thrashed 2018 CWG gold medallist Conor 5-0 in the semi-finals of the flyweight (52kg) category.
DESWAL-ABHISHEK DUO SHOOTS GOLD
NEWDELHI: ISSF Junior World Cup gold medallist Yashashwini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Varma bagged gold in a nail-biting finish to the 10m air pistol mixed team senior category while Punjab’s Surinder Singh combined with Simranpreet Kaur to overshadow their opponents with a score of 469.9 in the junior mixed team category at the 18th KSS Memorial Shooting Championship on Friday.
