NEW DELHI: A businessman, his wife and their doctor friend were killed when their car crashed into a parked truck in outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri in the early hours of Sunday, the police said.

Rajendra Singh Sagar, additional deputy commissioner of police (outer), said the truck’s parking light was not switched on and the truck driver had not taken precautions while parking on the roadside. The truck driver fled the accident spot, but he has been identified and efforts are on to nab him, said Sagar.

“We are also probing the possibilities that the car was speeding and the car’s driver happened to doze off behind the wheel,” said Sagar.

An attendant at a nearby fuel pump claimed he saw the car speeding, police officers said.

The dead have been identified as Harvinder Madan (52), his wife Bharti Madan (50) and their friend, Satya Ranjan (50). The fourth occupant of the car, 42-year-old property dealer Gur- vinder Singh, is critical, police officers said. Singh lives in Nihal Vihar, while the remaining occupants were residents of Paschim Vihar.

Harvinder ran a rehabilitation centre, while his wife operated a parlour. Ranjan, a homeopathy doctor, practised at a private clinic, police officers said.

“The four were returning after attending a religious session at an ashram in Punjab,” said an investigator.

Police said they received a call reporting the accident on the descent of Mangolpuri Flyover around 1.30am on Sunday.

“The impact of the hit was such that the entire front portion of the dark grey Etios got stuck under the truck’s rear end. The airbags in the car were triggered, but it was not enough to save them,” the investigator said.

The staff from a nearby CNG station were the first respondents, but they were unable to take the victims out. The victims were taken out after police and fire personnel arrived and managed to tear the car open.
