NEWDELHI: The first day of admissions under the fourth cutoff list at Delhi University started on Friday with more students cancelling their admissions as compared to new enrolments in colleges. Of the 56,000 total seats available in DU colleges, as many as 44,700 seats were filled by the end of admissions under the third cutoff list. But on Friday, the total number of admissions dropped to 43,010, a DU official said.

“Today, we recorded 1,596 admissions and 2,913 cancellations. Many students opted out to take admission to engineering and other technical courses. Many shifted within colleges to go get their preferred courses,” the official said.

With a total of 1,515 students opting for courses in the college, Hans Raj College recorded the maximum number of admis- sions. Even now, admissions into Economics (Hons), Bcom (Hons) and English (Hons) are open at the college. The respective cutoffs for the courses are 96.75% and 95.75%. On Friday, Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women admitted 1,418 students and Miranda House admitted 1,417.

The courses for which there have been maximum number of cancellations are Bcom (Hons), followed by Bcom, BA Pro- gramme, Economics (Hons) and English (Hons). The maximum number of admissions have been in BA Programme, Bcom, Bcom (Hons), Political Science (Hons) and Maths (Hons).

“These are popular courses. During the first two lists, students secure admission in any college they meet the cutoff demand for. But later, they move to colleges of their preference. That is why maximum cancellations and admissions happen in these courses,” another DU official said.

Although many colleges have closed admissions for certain courses, some popular courses such as Economics (Hons) and English (Hons) are still open for admissions at a few colleges.

Manoj Khanna, principal of Ramjas College, said, “Our cutoff in this list has mostly remained same as we have very few seats left in courses.” Of the 18 courses the college offers, admissions are closed for five.
