NEWDELHI: The Delhi Police crime branch has arrested a 40-yearold former state level weightlifter for allegedly murdering a private financer at his Rohini office three years ago.

Police said Praveen Kumar Lamba from Harewali village near Bawana in Delhi had been evading arrest. His partners in the crime – Sanjeev Gora, Surender Bhola and Deepak – had been arrested. They had allegedly shot dead Vijay Lamba on Janu- ary 17, 2015 to settle a financial dispute between him and Sanjeev. Praveen was arrested on July 3 near Auchandi border, said police.

Ajit Kumar Singla, additional commissioner of police (crime), said Praveen had bagged the second position in a state-level weightlifting competition in the 62-kg category in Delhi in 2001.

“Due to financial constraints, Praveen could not pursue his dreams of becoming a national weightlifter. He began working with his fellow weightlifter, Sanjeev Gora, who was into money- lending business,” said Singla.

According to Singla, Sanjeev and Vijay were running a nightclub in partnership in Gurugram. But they had fallen out with each other after a financial dispute. Vijay had been allegedly threatening Sanjeev and demanding money.

“Sanjeev decided to kill Vijay. He roped in Deepak, Surender and Praveen and they gunned down Vijay at his office in Rohini Sector-11. A murder case was registered at the Prashant Vihar and except Praveen all three were arrested,” said Singla.
