NEW DELHI: A 31-year-old man, who had allegedly entered a house in north Delhi’s Burari to commit burglary on Wednesday evening, died after he fell from the first floor and was allegedly thrashed by residents of the area. Police said they are awaiting the postmortem report to ascertain whether the death was caused due to the fall or because of being beaten up.

Police have identified the victim as Birbal, a resident of the same area.

According to senior police officers, Birbal and one of his associate had entered a woman’s house in Burari to commit burglary. While they were stealing, the woman returned home and raised an alarm after spotting the duo in her house.

“As a result, the two men tried escape. Birbal tried to climb a wooden ladder to escape through the terrace but the ladder broke and he fell from the first floor. Since his associate had managed to flee, locals who had gathered caught Birbal and allegedly thrashed him. They then called up police and handed him over. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries,” said a senior police officer who is not authorised to speak to the media.

Deputy commissioner of police (North), Nupur Prasad, said, “Prima facie it seems the man sustained fatal head injuries and succumbed to it. No external assault injury was seen on his body. We have registered two separate FIRS of attempt to burglary against the victim and another against the locals under IPC 304 for culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” the DCP said.

He added that sections of murder will be added if the postmortem report suggests he died as a result of being beaten up.
