Monsoon fury may abate in Delhi-ncr by Sunday
NEWDELHI/NOIDA/GHAZIABAD: Delhi recorded its second heaviest spell of monsoon rain this season, as the downpour that started on Thursday pounded the city through the night and into Friday before letting up at noon. Heavy rain also lashed other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) centred on Delhi, such as Ghaziabad and Noida .
In Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, 33 people were killed and about two dozen injured as heavy rain wreaked havoc in different parts of the state, state relief commissioner Sanjay Kumar said on Friday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast that intermittent showers are likely until at least till Sunday in the NCR although their intensity, distribution and duration will diminish as the weather systems that triggered the rain are weakening.
“While Safdarjung area, which is taken to be a representative of Delhi’s weather, received around 45.8 mm rain between 8:30 am on Thursday and 8:30 am on Friday, it received another 2mm of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on n Friday, taking the total rain to around 47 mm,” said a senior IMD official.
It was the heaviest spell of rain recorded by the capital since Safdarjung received 52.4 mm of rain on July 16
Until 5:30 pm, Palam received around 39 mm, Lodhi Road around 53 mm, Ridge area around 48 mm and Aya Nagar around 43 mm. On Friday, Gautam Budh Nagar, which includes Noida, recorded 98mm of rainfall while Ghaziabad received 39.2 mm.
A three-storey building col- lapsed in Garhi Chaukhandi village in Noida on Friday morning, purportedly because of a weak foundation and poor quality of construction material used by the builder. The Noida authority had sealed it about four months back as the building had come up on government land.
The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi breached the warning level of 204m after Haryana released more water.
