NEW DELHI : A four-foot python was rescued from Aya Nagar, a residential colony in south Delhi, late on Monday.

The snake was found coiled on the deck of a two-wheeler around 10.30pm and the frightened locals dialled the wildlife rescue helpline.

The snake, a juvenile Indian Rock python, reached the vehicle seeking shelter from rain. This, however, caused panic in the neighbourhood.

The snake is currently under observation and will soon be released into its natural habitat. Two snake rescuers reached the location and rescued the reptile in around half an hour.

The snake was rescued by the rapid response unit of Wildlife SOS.

This snake species is non- venomous and can be found in green patches around the city.

“I was shocked to find the snake coiled on the deck of my scooter. As we live in the outskirts of the city, there are many forested areas nearby and we often find snakes in the neighbourhood. However, this was the first time that we saw a python,” said Kiran Kumar, who spotted the snake and called the distress helpline.

According to Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS, during the monsoon, many reptiles struggle to find a safe habitat in the deforested city and end up near human habitats.

Most snakes are burrowing reptiles and they spend most of their time underground but, during monsoons, their homes get destroyed by the rainwater and are forced to venture into human habitations, in search of rodents and lizards, he said.
