NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old woman was shot dead by her husband in south west Delhi’s Rajkori village on Thursday afternoon, allegedly after a heated argument between the couple. Police said the man was drunk at the time of the incident and was later arrested from the spot.

Police have identified the deceased as Gunjan and her husband as Anil Kumar, a native of Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh, who had been living in Rajokri village with his wife and three kids as a tenant for the past seven months. The children were at their school during the incident, police said.

Senior officers said that a PCR call was received at 1pm reporting that a woman has been shot at by her husband inside their house.

A police team then rushed to the spot and found a woman lying unconscious on the floor. She was rushed to a hospital in Vasant Kunj where the doctors pronounced her dead. The body was shifted to AIIMS for post-mortem, police said.

“The neighbours and family members told us that, Anil Kumar (33), the husband of the deceased woman, works as a security guard with a private firm. On Thursday morning, when he returned home from duty, he was drunk. The couple had a fight over Kumar’s drinking habit, after which he left the house and returned in the afternoon, allegedly after having consumed more alcohol. The couple then again had a fight during which Kumar shot his wife in her chest with his double barrel licensed gun,” said a senior police officer, not authorised to speak to media.

Police said, that the couple’s landlord who also stay in the same building, heard the gunshot and rushed down. He saw the woman bleeding and called the police. The suspect was found sitting in the same room near his wife’s body, police said.

Devendra Arya, deputy commissioner of police (southwest), said that a case has been registered at Vasant Kunj (south) police station under IPC Section 302 for murder.
