JNU STUDENTS, TEACHERS PROTEST ATTACK ON JNU LEADER

-

NEWDELHI: Students and teachers of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Thursday staged a protest at Parliament Street to condemn the recent attack on PHD scholar Umar Khalid.

While students had first gathered at Jantar Mantar to stage the protest, Delhi Police denied them permission saying no demonstrations can be allowed till guidelines are laid out. After a scuffle with police officials deployed at the spot, the crowd, carrying ‘United against Hate’ banners, marched towards Parliament Street.

Students from various organisations, including those from Delhi University, joined the protest that was titled ‘Khauf se Azadi’. Condemning the attack, protesters said the attack was the result of a hate campaign launched against Khalid by the Bjp-ruled Central government.

Khalid who joined the protesters later due to security reasons, addressed the crowd. “This attempt to kill is not going to scare me. I will continue to raise questions and take to the streets in this fight against hate. There is an atmosphere of fear in the country because of attacks on all those who express dissent against which we have to keep fighting,” Khalid said.

he also added that it was a pity that even though two men in a video had claimed responsibility for the attack, Delhi police had not taken any action so far.
