NEW DELHI: A 29-year-old man, allegedly involved in four cash van robberies in Delhi over the last one year, was arrested after a 10km chase on motorcycles, police said on Thursday. He had made off with a total of ₹57 lakh after the four robberies.

In the latest robbery in Narela on April 26, Jitender alias Jeetu had allegedly shot dead the gunman and cashier of a cash management company during the robbery. The gang then made off with ₹12 lakh, police said.

Sanjeev Yadav, deputy commissioner of police (special cell), said Jitender was arrested from Goga Dairy in Bawana last Saturday after a police team received a tip-off.

“When the police team tried to intercept Jitender’s motorcycle in Narela, he gave them the slip. The police team then chased him on motorcycles for 10 kilometres. On multiple occasions, he rammed police’s motorcycles in a bid to escape them,” the DCP said.

Jitender also allegedly tried to shoot at the police team, when his last-ditch attempt to escape on foot was foiled. “He was overpow- ered and the pistol recovered,” the DCP said.

Yadav said Jitender made his foray into crime as an extortionist, but soon took to robberies. The first of his victims was a businessman in Narela whom Jitender allegedly robbed at gunpoint in 2016.

Since last year, Jitender had allegedly been targeting cash vans. The first of the four such robberies was in Narela in July last year — he and his associates allegedly robbed the cash van of ₹19 lakh.

After that, he and his accomplices allegedly robbed three cash vans between February and April this year. On April 26, two staffers of the cash management company were shot dead in Narela.

On February 3, they robbed a cash van in Rohini of ₹10 lakh. On March 26, he and his accomplices robbed a cash van in Sultanpuri of ₹16 lakh.

Police said Jitender was forced to hide in Uttar Pradesh all these days and was waiting for the situation to normalise before continuing with the robberies, police said. His accomplices are on the run and efforts are on to trace them, police said. GURUGRAM: A 41-year-old man was allegedly cheated of ₹60,000 by men, posing as railway officials, in the Farrukhnagar area, police said on Thursday.

Rajbir (41), a guard at Indian Railways, told police the accused transferred ₹60,000 from his account on July 22, after tricking him into disclosing his bank account details over telephone.

An FIR was filed at Farrukhnagar police station on August 15 under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. Jaiveer Singh, the investigating officer, said the fraudsters transferred the money to two digital wallets and police have asked the firms to submit transactions details.
