NEW DELHI: Four men were injured after two groups clashed in Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara, on Wednesday evening. Police said the clash was sparked when two men on a bike thrashed a passerby, who had objected after the bike brushed past him.

The passerby then called his three friends. They reached the house where the two bikers had gone to visit a friend. The pas- serby and his friends then thrashed the two men and their associate, police said.

Police have identified six men for instigating violence and two separate FIRS have been registered on the complaints from both the groups.

Police, however, did not give names of the accused and the victims, citing “sensitivity of the matter”.

The incident took place around 7.30 pm on Wednesday when two men on a bike hit a passerby. A police team that arrived on the spot and took the injured to hospital.

Deputy commissioner of police ( Shahadra), Meghna Yadav said that they have registered two cases, each based on complaint received from the two groups.

“From one side, a case of assault and attempt to commit culpable homicide has been registered and on the complaint of the other group, an FIR of assault and under section 431 (punishment for wrongful restraint) has been lodged,” Yadav said.

The DCP said that they have identified the miscreants. “No one was seriously injured and are fit for statement. This is not a communal fight,” she said.

Initially, there were speculations that the violence was sparked during playing of national anthem in the area, or due to an argument over kite flying, however, the DCP brushed aside such allegations.

“The quarrel started due to a motorcycle touching a passerby. The incident has no connection to anyone opposing the national anthem,” Yadav said.

She also said that no rapid action force was deployed. “Only the beat staff from district police was deployed at the spot. Situation is peaceful. The force initially deployed at Farsh Bazar on Thursday was because of the ongoing sealing drive,” the officer said.
