NEWDELHI: More than 100 workers from the Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress (DPMC) on Friday took to the streets of the national capital to protest against the rising fuel prices in the country.

The party on Friday also started a campaign, ‘DPMC with people’, which was led by its president Sharmistha Mukherjee. As part of the campaign, workers interacted with Delhiites on the streets and in public buses taking reactions of how the steep hike in petrol and diesel prices have affected their lives.

These reactions were recorded and uploaded on social media platforms to attract the Union government’s attention on the plight of people.

The copy of the videos, Mukherjee said, will be sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

“Despite a fall in international crude oil prices — contrary to the case during the Congress government’s time — the central excise duty on petrol has been raised from ₹9.48/litre to ₹19.48/ litre by the Narendra Modi government,” said Mukherjee.

She also attacked the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi saying that they were equally responsible for the hike.

“The value-added tax (VAT) on petrol has been increased by the Arvind Kejriwal government from 20% to 27%, and on diesel from 12.5% to 18%,” the DPMC president said.

In one of the videos shared by the Delhi Congress’s Twitter handle, a commuter travelling in a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus is seen stating that that his car had been reduced to being a “showpiece” idling away in a parking lot because of the high petrol prices.
