TRAFFIC JAMS LIKELY NEXT WEEK OWING TO FESTIVE RUSH

-

NEW DELHI: Delhi residents are likely to face massive traffic snarls in the coming week as the festive rush around markets of the city is likely to pick up, the traffic police have warned.

Traffic officials said they have started preparing space around popular markets to accommodate the additional rush. Civic agencies too have been asked to fix parking lots and make arrangements around the market area to be used as additional parking space.

Markings on roads are also being repainted to ensure that vehicles parked on roadsides do not spill over to the main carriageways.

Market associations of Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Rajouri Garden, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, Sadar Bazar and CR Park are being given lessons on managing the shoppers’ rush to avoid any untoward incidents.

“We have asked shop owners to deploy someone at the entrances or outside the shops to manage shoppers,” said a senior traffic official.

According to traffic police data, last year close to 3,900 traffic ja ms complaints were received between Durga Pooja and Diwali. This was the case when traders claimed that the footfall in markets had thinned as people were still recovering from the impact of demonetisation.

Traffic officials said that the prominent stretches that are likely to face traffic holdups are sections of the Ring Road — around Nauroji Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Safdarjung Hospital, and Moolchand crossing — Sri Aurobindo Marg, Moti Bagh, Dhaula Kuan, Laxmi Nagar, Pitampura, Rajouri Garden main market, Tilak Nagar intersection, and Delhi Gate crossing.
