NEWDELHI: Installation of nearly three lakh CCTV cameras in Delhi government schools, and in residential colonies across the city, could take another three months, the public works department (PWD) told the committee of assurances of the Delhi Assembly Friday.

The committee, which scrutinises the promises and undertakings given by ministers on the floor of the House, was also informed by the PWD that it was only on Thursday that the directorate of education (DOE) sanctioned ₹597.51 crore to the department to begin the installation of 1.46 lakh CCTV cameras in the 1,028 state government schools.

“The tender for 1.46 lakh cameras was floated in March this year and the one for 1.4 lakh cameras in residential and market areas of the city was done in February. Since some time has lapsed, the PWD secretary told us that they are reviewing the tenders to see if all aspects are in place,” Jitender Singh Tomar, chairperson of the committee, said.

The PWD secretary, however, said if they find anomalies in the tenders, they would have to go for fresh tenders which could take three more months.

“If everything is fine with the existing tenders, then work can be awarded to the successful bidder within 15 days,” Tomar said.

First 100 e-buses by July 2019 Apart from the CCTV camera project, the committee also reviewed the transport department’s plan to introduce 1,000 electric buses i n the city. Another member from the committee, who did not wish to be named, said the transport department has stated that it would roll out the first batch of 100 electric buses by July next year.

“After that, more e-buses will be inducted in phases,” the member said.

Currently, the Delhi Integrated Multi-modal System (DIMTS) is doing a study on the type and model of procurement of these buses. The company, in which the Delhi government has a 50% stake, is to submit its report to the transport department by the end of November.

In a month or so, a team of officials from DIMTS and the state transport department will also be sent to China for studying that country’s e-bus network.

The committee also briefly took an update of the government’s plan to set up mohalla clinics across Delhi. Currently, only about 165 of them are functional.
